The Saint
 

Professor Ramses Smith-Smyth-Smythe of Timbuctoo was a firm believer in the cheerful hospitality of the English countryside, until he registered for the night at the Beacon Inn, where: first his waiter fed him knock out drops, and then the chauffeur wrecked his car, and then the porter ransacked his bags.

Of course, the fact that Professor Smythe was 
Alias The Saint
Might have had some effect on the temperature of his welcome
